Do You Need VOIP

VoIP is the name of the newest Communications Technology and as the full definition tells us, this technology is used to carry a traditional “Telephone Conversation” over a Computer Network.

Although the Internet Protocol portion of the definition leads us to believe that you must use the Internet to have a VoIP Telephone call, that is not the case; you can have VoIP conversations on many types of networks, Local Area Networks (LAN), Wide Area Networks (WAN), Wireless, Public, Private, and Cable. The most preferred type at the corporate level is the private dedicated network, LAN or WAN. For Home users the most preferred is Broadband, the favorite by a mile.

The introduction of VoIP and the positives it brings is still somewhat miss-understood. We often hear questions and statements like, “VoIP, why do I need it?” or “VoIP, you must have it to better your business”. In order to qualify both this question and this statement, as with all your business decisions, you must first figure out if in fact you actually need this Technology to continue to be successful and then the expense of introducing VoIP to an already established Computer Network.

To determine if you need VoIP can be simply answered by the way you do business. For example if you have multiple offices, in different buildings within a campus like location this would be a good candidate for a VoIP solution. The theory of this solution is that by expanding your Computer Network and Telephone System to VoIP Levels of technology integrating both Systems and having all Telephone traffic run through your LAN you then eliminate or reduce your Monthly Telephone bills associated to the remote offices. The savings from the elimination or reduction will then offset the Expense of investing in your LAN and Telephone System.

On a smaller scale, a good candidate would be for your employees who work from home. Instead of having the expense of a Telephone Bill that the Company will have to pay, you can create a Virtual Private Network on your LAN and with a VoIP telephone and their Home Broadband and an inexpensive Router, which most homes have these days. By so doing they can be directly connected to the Office Telephone System and use it as if they were right there in the building.

When VoIP is introduced and correctly integrated, to the Computer Network and Phone System, of an organization that needs it, we find that Communication Costs are Reduced and Productivity increases.
